70th Anniv. Geocaching Event FAQ Who: Mississippi River Parkway Commission—a 10-state organization comprised of the states bordering the Mississippi River are sponsoring this special 70th Anniversary Geocaching event.
What: A 70th Anniversary 10-state geocaching event featuring 7 new caches in each of the 10 states in locations near the Mississippi River and Great River Road. Click here to find the designated caches involved in the geocaching event in each state . Where: Caches are placed in counties bordering the Great River Road area within the 10 states that border the Mississippi River. The placement of the caches was selected based on the historical significance of the location.
When: The 5-month geocaching event begins May 1, 2008 and concludes September 23, 2008
Why: The 10-state geocaching event is a celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Great River Road designation.
How do I get started?: Click here to get your Great River Road Geocaching Log sheet (PDF). Take this sheet with you as you find the caches involved in the 70th Anniversary Great River Road Geocaching Event. Each cache has a code that you will need to record on your log sheet to confirm that the cache was found.
What are the prizes?:
- (2) Grand Prizes: 5 Weekend Stays in 5 States—plus $500 with one year to redeem your weekend stays. This prize is divided into an Upper Mississippi River Package (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Missouri) and a Lower Mississippi River Package (Kentucky, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana). Please note on your log sheet if you would prefer to be registered for the Upper Mississippi River Package, the Lower Mississippi River Package or both.
- (10) First Prizes: Ten winners will be selected to receive a special basket of goods from the participating states—and all baskets will include one overnight weekend stay package.
What if one of the ten states bordering the Mississippi River doesn’t have any caches listed?: Due to a spring filled with inclement weather—especially flooding along the Mississippi River, some states have not been able to place their caches yet. The deadline for the geocaching event is September 23, 2008, so keep checking back as more caches will be added.
How do I become entered to win?: To be eligible to enter the prize drawing, you must find at least 10 caches, with one cache from at least three different states. You name will be entered into the drawing for each state in which you found a cache. If you find ten 70th Anniversary Caches in ten different states, you’ll be entered the maximum ten times! For example, you could find one cache in Minnesota, one cache in Wisconsin and eight caches in Iowa and be entered in the drawing three times. Remember, only 70th Anniversary Caches qualify.
Once you have completed your caching along the Great River Road, send your completed log sheet to: Mississippi River Parkway Commission, 222 State Street, Suite 400, Madison WI 53703 or fax the completed sheet to 608-242-8896. Clearly print your contact information so you can be contacted.
When will winners be selected?: The drawing will take place during the Mississippi River Parkway Committee’s Annual Conference in Bettendorf, Iowa, which begins September 27th. More information on the drawing and geocaching related events taking place during the conference will follow.
Is there an age requirement?: You must be 18 or older to enter the geocaching event.
How many times can I enter?: Each individual can enter one time and each household can only win one prize. However, there might be more than one individual who enters per household.
