Mississippi River Fun Facts
Great River RoadThe Great River Road was established in 1938 as the national parkway of the Mississippi River. Follow the green Pilot's Wheel road signs that mark its route nearly 3,000 miles through 10 states.
Explorer Henry Schoolcraft was the first white man to locate and document the true source of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota. The year was 1830.
Favorite Places Along the River
My favorite view of the Mississippi River is in the Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The park is 1,800 acres of earthworks, cannons, monuments and the most spectacular overlook of the River. Also displayed at the park is the "USS Cairo," a Union ironclad sunk by the Confederacy and raised after more than a century underwater.

Favorite Places Beyond the River
In downtown Louisville, KY, the Muhammad Ali Center features an orientation theater, media stations and interactive exhibits. Follow Ali through his life and career by taking a take a boxing lesson in a ring with the assistance of his daughter via video or exchange cultural ideas on-line to help encourage a better understanding of world diversity.
