Mississippi River Fun Facts
Great River RoadThe Great River Road was established in 1938 as the national parkway of the Mississippi River. Follow the green Pilot's Wheel road signs that mark its route nearly 3,000 miles through 10 states.
The name "Mississippi" comes from the Anishinabe people (Ojibwe Indians). They called the river "Messipi" or "Mee-zee-see-bee," which means "Big River" or "Father of Waters."
Favorite Places Along the River
Have you read “Rising Tide” by John M. Barry? It is one of my very favorite books about the river.
